Windows XP Support Ceased By Microsoft

As you are probably aware earlier this week Microsoft ceased supporting Windows XP which means that there will be no updates for the operating system.

What does the cancelation of Windows XP support mean for me?

  • Your computer will still work
  • Your PC or laptop will be coming more vulnerable to security risks
  • Your computer will become more vulnerable to viruses.
  • There’s no free or paid support for your computer
  • No security hot fixes if your computer’s security is breached

How do I stay protected now there’s no Windows XP support?

  • Option 1 (not always possible) - Upgrade your current computer to a newer operating system
  • Option 2 – purchase a new computer & migrate your old computers settings, files and user profiles

How do I Upgrade Windows XP?

  • Download & run the “Windows Upgrade Assistant”
  • If your computer is suitable follow the step by step tutorial on screen.
  • If your computer is capable of upgrading to Windows 8 then you will be entitled to freely upgrade to the latest version Windows 8.1

If you experience any problems when trying to upgrade your computer then please get in touch via the contact form and one of our Microsoft experts will guide you through the process.

How do I Transfer my Windows XP data?

Option 1 – Download a piece of software called “Laplink”

  • Follow the step by step wizard
  • Use their transfer assistance if you need it

Option 2 – Use Microsoft’s on “files and setting transfer wizard”
Part 1

  • Navigate to “system tools” via “accessories” and click “Files and Settings Transfer Wizard”
  • Select Old Computer
  • Select the media/storage type you are using to transfer the files and settings
  • Select the options you want to transfer, e.g “settings only”, “files only” or “both files and settings”.
  • Click “next” and wait for the transfer to finish before clicking “finish”

Part 2

  • Navigate to “system tools” via “accessories” and click “Files and Settings Transfer Wizard”
  • Select New Computer
  • Select “I don’t need the wizard disk; I have already collected my files and settings from my old computer”.
  • Select the media/storage type you are using to transfer the files and settings
